“UNRWA 60 YEARS: PALESTINIAN REFUGEES”

The so called “nakba” (disaster) by the Palestinian population took place in 1948. As a result of the foundation and expansion of the state of Israel, the Palestinian population is thrown out of their territories and they settle down in refugee camps scattered throughout the Middle East. Over four million Palestinian people are condemned to live away from their land.

The project “SIXTY YEARS OF HISTORY: PALESTINIAN REFUGEES” consists of a photograph exhibition from the archives of the United Nations which depicts the reality of the refugee camps since they were first set up in 1948. The first part of the exhibition traces back the origins and historical route of the refugees and the work of the UN Agency for the Palestinian Refugees –UNRWA-, and then it goes on to describe the work developed by UNRWA in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, The West Bank and the Gaza Strip, along the five levels of assistance of the Agency for the Palestinian Refugees: education, health, emergencies, economical development and social welfare.

The aim of this exhibition is to help people become aware of the causes and consequences of the conflict which led to the setting up of UNRWA, as well as of the present reality of Palestinian refugees and of the assistance that the Agency provides them with since 1950.
Additionally, on the exhibition’s opening day a short movie will be shown on the reality of the Palestinian refugees and UNRWA, followed by a lecture delivered by an expert from the Agency’s Spanish Committee, on the current humanitarian situation of the Palestinian refugees.
